With over 170 years of expertise in mastering fermentation, from miniaturized tests and bioprocess design to large-scale industrial applications, the company recognizes the immense value of microorganism strains and their potential to develop microbial solutions addressing pressing global challenges.

Lesaffre’s openness to international collaboration and open innovation has led the company to forge more than 90 partnerships with private and public sectors. This extensive network of high-level experts allows Lesaffre to develop proven and sustainable solutions.

Over the last decade, Chinese academic researchers have emerged as global leaders in the field of microbiology, microbial genetic engineering and fermentation, thanks to the exceptional scientific excellence of Chinese research.

Lesaffre is willing to collaborate with the country’s best academic talents, contributing to the advancement of science for the benefit of sustainable innovation.

After consultation with the Ministry of science and technology, the Chinese Academy of Science, the Chinese Agricultural Academy of Science, the Chinese Institute of Food Science and Technology and the Chinese Society of Plant Nutrition and Fertilizer Science, Lesaffre is launching the Lesaffre China Research Grant program. This initiative will fund significant research projects, promoting innovation in synthetic biology applied to microorganisms and fermented solutions, and aligned with Lesaffre’ s major businesses and mission: “Working together to better nourish and protect the planet”.

Scope of the Grant

The objective of Lesaffre China Research Grant program is to select and fund projects that will leverage the full potential of microbial genetic engineering and regional biodiversity to address food, feed and environmental challenges. Such selection will involve a jury comprising Lesaffre internal scientific experts as well as renowned experts selected from the International scientific community.

The first edition of the Lesaffre China Research Grant will focus on promoting innovation in synthetic biology applied to microorganisms and fermented solutions in the area of soil fertility improvement and ideally carbon sequestration through microbial solutions.

Although the fit with the topic of the project will be considered as an evaluation criteria, we are however open to consider any other highly innovative proposals which might lead to significant advances in synthetic microbiology in other areas related to Lesaffre businesses.

Preference will be given to innovative approaches leveraging microbial genetic engineering or domestication techniques, especially those involving microorganisms originating from China’s rich biodiversity.

To achieve these objectives, both single laboratory and/or transdisciplinary and collaborative approaches are welcomed.

The project’s capacity to deliver proof of concept and/or more advanced protectable results (patents, know-how, etc.) by the end of the project (TRL 3-4) will be considered in the selection process.

Applicants are encouraged to highlight sustainability interests in their project proposal, as these will be given special consideration in the evaluation process.

Project monitoring

Each selected project will be assigned a key contact at Lesaffre to exchange on the progress of the project with the Coordinator.

Project coordinators of the selected projects commit to provide at least a comprehensive assessment report at the end of the project.

Cost and duration of projects

Lesaffre will fund 1 to 2 projects with a maximum amount of €100,000 per project. The maximum duration of projects is 2 years, and they should ideally begin in the first quarter of 2026, no later than April 1st, 2026.

The Lesaffre China Research Grant is fully funded by Lesaffre. Eligible costs include marginal costs (non-permanent personnel expenses related to the project, operating costs, travel expenses, small equipment, and services). Permanent staff costs and overhead expenses are not covered.

All expenditure must be justified and directly related to the achievement of the project objectives.

The funding will be provided according to a payment schedule defined in the project agreement which should be as follows:

Funding payment in 3 payment terms:

  • 50% at contract signature
  • 30% at the end of the first year after participating in the annual meeting at Lesaffre.
  • 20% after receiving of final report

Payment by Lesaffre will be done directly to the Coordinator or its Institution, who will redistribute part of the funding to other co-participants if relevant.

Project coordinators will be responsible for the proper management and allocation of funds in accordance with the approved project budget.
